Making realistic and non-repetitive textures is not an easy task in 3D modeling. In this short tutorial I want to describe a simple blending technique to make your 3D render images less monotone and more interesting.
In this example I made a simple scene of some egyptian lotus columns in Bryce 5 (the lotus column is available in the download section). Two render images (with the same size) were made using different (standard) textures for the colums and terrain.
The textures are OK, but monotone.
Two object masks (columns and mountains) were also rendered from the scene.
In this tutorial the blending was performed in Photoshop. Other 2D applications may be used in a similar fashion.
1. Both images were opened in Photoshop and the render2 image was imported into the render1 image by using the Move tool (V).
2. Add a layer mask to the render2 layer (Layer -> Add Layer -> Hide All).
3. Import the columns and mountains masks into the file.
4. Activate the columns mask layer and select the Magic Wand Tool (W, Tolerance:0, Contiguous: unchecked) and click in the white area. The columns are now selected.
5. Activate the render2 layer and click on the (black) mask image.
6. Select the Brush tool (B) and lower the opacity to 10-30%. Select a brush form of your choice, brushes with low hardness are ideal.
7. Press D to make set the Default Foreground and Background Colors and make the Foreground Color White.
8. Start painting on the areas where you want to blend the render2 image. When you repeat painting the same area, the render2 image will blend more (see base of the columns in the image below).
9. When you are satisfied with the texture of the columns, repeat this procedure by using the mountains mask.
By using this simple technique you can improve your renders!
